Berlin’s a happening city, but don’t be fooled by all the thumping techno clubs and museums. Tucked away amongst the concrete jungle, you’ll find awesome parks that are basically an extension of Berlin’s cool factor, but with a side of sunshine and fresh air.

Here’s a quick look at a few of these leafy hangouts:

1. Tiergarten

  • Think Central Park, But European: Slap bang in the middle of Berlin, Tiergarten is like a giant green lung for the city. It’s got a wild history, having been a playground for Prussian kings in the past. Now it’s all about walking paths, grassy knolls for sprawling out on, and peaceful lakes for taking a lazy rowboat ride.
  • Activities: Feeling like a history buff? Check out the Siegessäule (Victory Column) or the Soviet War Memorial. More in the mood for chilling? Rent a bike and cruise around, or just grab a frisbee and have a laugh with friends.

2. Tempelhofer Feld:

  • Land the Plane, Then Picnic on the Runway: This former airport is now a one-of-a-kind park unlike anything you’ve seen before. The old Tempelhof Airport buildings are still there, a cool reminder of the days when jumbo jets roared overhead.
  • Activities: Feeling sporty? Tempelhofer Feld is a haven for kite flyers, joggers, and cyclists. More of a foodie? Don’t worry, there are street food markets throughout the year. Plus, it’s a common spot for open-air concerts and events, so keep an eye out for something fun happening.

3. Mauerpark:

  • Flea Markets, Karaoke, and a Slice of History: Mauerpark’s right next to where the Berlin Wall used to be, and the park itself has sections of the wall that still stand as a reminder of the past. Pretty powerful stuff.
  • Activities: Weekends at Mauerpark are legendary. There’s a massive flea market where you can hunt for vintage treasures or quirky souvenirs. Feeling like a rockstar? The park has a big amphitheater where people have epic open-air karaoke sessions. It’s basically a must-do for anyone wanting a taste of Berlin’s unique vibe.

4. Volkspark Friedrichshain:

  • People’s park: Volkspark Friedrichshain in Friedrichshain is Berlin’s oldest public park, and it’s steeped in history.
  • Activities: Take a break from the city and wander through the park’s meadows, past rose gardens, and decorative ponds. Check out the Märchenbrunnen (Fairytale Fountain), a whimsical sculpture depicting figures from German folklore. If you’re feeling energetic, Volkspark Friedrichshain has a skate park, tennis courts, and plenty of space for ball games. There’s also a beer garden here, perfect for a post-workout refreshment.

5. Viktoriapark

  • Hilltop hangout: Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg is famous for being Berlin’s second-highest natural elevation (it’s not much, but hey, every meter counts!). It’s also known for its artificial waterfall cascading down a man-made mountain.
  • Activities: Climb the Viktoriapark hill for stunning views of the city – perfect for sunset picnics or romantic strolls. You can also explore the vineyards on the southern slopes, a surprising find in the middle of Berlin.
